Preventing And Recovering From Water Damage

Water Damage

Water damage simply put, is the intrusion of varying degrees of water that causes damage to property or possessions. The amount of damage maybe only slight, such as cell phone water damage. Alternatively it can be huge resulting in the loss of one's home. This would usually be caused by major flooding.

Generally water damaged items can be covered on one's home insurance, however flooding will not be covered automatically. If coverage is allowed it will be as a seperate addition to the policy at an increased monthly premium.

Once the flood water has rescinded the removal process can begin. But this can take some time. About 13 years ago I was the victim of a flash flood from a nearby river. It had rained for almost one week, without any let up. In fact it was still raining heavily when I happened to go upstairs in my home and glanced out of the window. What greeted me was totally shocking. A huge volume of water was literally racing over the ground towards us.

In a matter of minutes it had covered hundreds of yards and was pouring into my back garden. At that point there was nothing to be done, except try and move everything we could from downstairs to higher ground.

Even though my homeowners policy did cover me and I was in a position to make a water damage claim, the length of time it took to clean up and replace and repair everyting took literally weeks. The house never ever seemed the same again.

The cost of water damage cleanup can be quite substantial especially the restoration of a property after the initial cleaning.Flood water leaves behind a whole host of problems, not least the horrible smells and slime, but the water will undoubtedly bring with it all manner of bacteria and fungi, which can cause extreme discomfort and even sickness.
Of course catastrophic flooding can and does totally destroy homes and property.

Water damage mold is potentially very serious and quite often goes unnoticed. Over time all walls and ceilings in one's home fade and may even become discolored. This is often ignored. However the underlying problem does not get taken care of and the mold will spread. The homeowners may soon begin to exhibit noticiable health concerns, with symptoms such as,chronic coughing, breathing difficulties, severe headaches and migraines, sinusitis, rashes and tiredness.

Water and flooding will cause a great deal of damage to hardwood floors. The first step to cleaning hardwood damaged by flood waters is to scrub with a stiff but non abrasive brush. The wooden floor will most likely have swollen and moved. The best thing to do initially is leave them to dry out. Try to speed up the process by increasing the ventilation to the damaged area, if you can, without causing more damage. It can literally take weeks for the wood to totally dry out.

Mold is a major problem with hardwood that has been subjected to flood water. If it is badly infected it must be replaced.

It would pay dividends in the long run to consider finding a water damge restoration service in your local area that you can call on quickly, should disaster strike. Emergency water removal and restoration has to begin immediately if you are going to prevent any long term or serious ongoing problems with your home. Remember mold remediation is essential, because of the severe health consequences to you and your family.
